The Newsweek Mistake

Newsweek's mistake was backing off, apologizing and then retracting.
Not only was what the story reported printed before, it's going to be upheld in the pending report. The real lesson here is what news organizations will do when put under pressure, not what they will print.
Newsweek has wrongly and maliciously been accused of causing the deaths of 10+ foreign nationals and putting American servicemen in danger - undermining the 'American War effort'.

The New York Times Story dated April 30th, 2005 makes the same charges about the Koran albeit in a more general way.
When the report is finally released it will be an educational experience in how the media reacts, and how the administration will pretend they never said the nasty, abusive, and just plain lies about Newsweek and its writers and what were the supposed effects.
The damnation goes to this administration and it's attempts to circumvent domestic and international law by moving the prisoners to a patch of land that they could keep out of the reach of observers while the legalities were fought over.
I don't care if the abuses happened in 2002, 2003 or 2005 - they happened and the government had to list directives to stop it in 2003.
Did it stop?
Who can tell, observers are still kept on an appointment only status and only just now are we putting a stop to unrecorded 'ghost' detainees.
If anyone holds blame for abuses, it's the same people that are always responsible when a captor holds a captive... The captor.
The incarceration of an individual carries a moral responsibility, and the crime of the accused or convicted does not absolve the captor of moral obligation.
No one is entitled to caviar snacks and Premium cable while a prisoner, but no person is permitted to conduct criminal activities against a prisoner, any prisoner for any 'reason'.
We -know- without a doubt that abuses have taken place, by the governments own admission.
It's up to the government to put a bright light on the places where these problems have taken place and bring in observers to assure the world that we are serious about stopping it.
Failing to do that causes harm to war efforts, puts the troops in danger and gives validity to the trouble makers who would use it to undo progress in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world.
The surest way to empower your enemy is to give truth to the lies they would tell about you anyways.

And now, reporters are not even supposed to report allegations until they are proven.
Tell me who will call for investigations to prove allegations, if they never hear of the allegations?
No one, and that's the way governments like it.

You are so right about this. The shame was that Newsweek backed off the story, not that it reported it in the first place. The WH is doing a stellar job of intimidating reporters into not doing their jobs.

It seems like some of this is starting to get through to John Q Public though. Maybe America is starting to wake up.

That they are Lorraine, and in that it's nothing new except to the degree at which it is taking place. Every president in my lifetime has complained about the power of the press and history shows that it was true even before Eisenhower, probably all the way back to John Hancock, who was third President of the Continental Congress, first President of the independent former colonies, this country's first President.

Sheryl,
I wish I could share your optimism, don't lose it.

It was restored once for about 5 minutes when Carter beat Ford.
I haven't seen it since Carter kept his promise to kill the B-1 bomber program.

1968, slap, 1972 slap, 1974 slap, 1976 yea - slap, 1984 slap, 1988 unreal read my lips slap, 1992 pretend non slap, 1996 zipper slap, 2000 WTF/WTC slap, 2004 WWDumbAss Slap.

It's all downhill from here.
Anyone having children should be sure to school them in useful arts like soap makin and folk medicine.

Oh and get them ready for the food for oil scandal following the 3rd Rice administration and the China/Europe/American war.

Whoa, let me check... Nope not totally black yet apparently I still think humanity survives, poorer, sicker, dumber but survives probably much as it did between 12,000 BCE and 6000 BCE.

Then the Apes forbid teaching us to talk and use us for domestic and farm labor.

Paul;

As a parent, I know that the effort we put into turning our kids into thinkers is ongoing. We are hardly alone. It's classic human adaptation... what we can't change overtly, we surmount covertly. The world is not a piss pot; it's a source of frustration, inspiration and rededication, but it is not a lost cause. We raise the next generation because we believe this.

Jet,
My above response to the post is an attempt at dark humor.

I am completely serious about diversity of education though...

Everyone should know just what needs to be done and how to do it in the absence of a modern support network.

The FoxFire book series is good for this, as well as a good set of scout manuals.

Of course it helps to take the family out and actually do some of it - catch, gut, cook, camp, suffer and smile.
It makes the family closer and teaches a valuable lesson about what food really is, and what needs really are.

The end is near, but it always has been.

Geez, now that you mention it, I guess if I were really as sure about the future, then maybe I would have had kids of my own by now.

But I hope it will be a good future, and I intend to be a good aunt to my niece. I actually like kids, which is maybe the irony of not wanting any so far.

Maybe I am just waiting for Mr. Perfect Father figure to come along first. He'll have to be fun and responsible and know how to laugh at and solve problems....An IQ quadruple my own, kind, generous, and in a financial position to afford children. Oh, and someone else will have to go through the pregnancy for me because I can't be bothered.
